When you are browsing the Hermès website, there may be confusion as to why exactly the same scarves have different price tags. What are the differences between the Hermès scarves in regular silk twill and wash silk twill? Have you ever wanted a Hermès scarf but hesitated to purchase it because you are not familiar to wash silk twill? Are there any ways to stiffen wash silk twill scarves?
The following is a personal attempt to compare these two types of scarves in several aspects: prices, sizes, texture, colours and lustre, style and durability. Lastly, there is a suggestion as to how to stiffen wash silk twill scarves.
Only two scarf samples were taken from my scarf collection for comparison purposes. The results may not be representatives of the whole universe of all other Hermès scarves.
Sample 1: Équateur was designed by Mr. Robert Dallet. Équateur in regular silk twill was issued in 1988, and the edition in wash silk twill was reissued in 2019.
Sample 2: Les Danses des Indiens in regular silk twill was issued in 1999, whereas Kachinas in wash silk twill was reissued in 2019. Both scarves were designed by Mr. Kermit Oliver.

What is the Hermès wash silk twill scarf?
According to the information provided by the Hermes website: The Hermès scarf was reinvented as the velvety soft wash scarf. Topstitched in the workshops, the Hermès artisans' experts follow an intricate process and wash the 90 cm. scarf by hand in a large bath. The scarf is transformed into a new slightly faded and mattified piece with a new texture and an irresistible soft touch. This exclusive process makes each scarf unique, and its dimensions can be slightly altered. Its silk acquires a beautiful, one-of-a-kind patina as a result. Wash silk scarves can now be washed in a washing machine.
Prices:
Hermès 90x90cm scarf in silk twill: USD $435 (CAD $500).
Hermès 90x90cm scarf in wash silk twill: USD $485 (CAD $555).
The wash silk twill price is higher than the regular silk twill price by 11%-11.5%.
Sizes:
The Équateur regular silk twill scarf was issued in 1988 - approximately 34.5 x 34.5 inches.
The Équateur wash silk twill scarf was issued in 2019 - approximately 34.5 x 32.5 inches.
Les Danses des Indiens regular silk twill scarf was issued in 1999 - approximately 34.5 x 33 inches.
Kachinas wash silk scarf was reissued in 2019 - approximately 34.5 x 33 inches.
As mentioned on the website about the wash silk twill scarf, "This exclusive process makes each scarf unique and can slightly alter its dimensions." The width of the Equateur wash silk twill scarf is two inches shorter than the original regular silk twill version. The scale of the motifs changes as a result.
