Texture:
Both of the Hermès Équateur and Les Danses des Indiens in regular silk twill are woven tightly, and its shape can be maintained for decades. The texture feels thick and stiff. Wrinkles only appear after knots are untied, and they would eventually fade away in a few days.
The texture of Hermès Équateur and Kachinas in wash silk is velvety, soft and delicate. The wrinkles caused by knotting are built up quickly, and they hardly fade away.
Colours and Lustre:
Although the wash silk twill Équateur is stunning, it cannot replace the original version's legendary place in my heart. The glossy animal drawings in the original version remain lively and vivid; it truly reflects the Mr. Robert Dallet’s artistic skills and Hermès’ highest craftsmanship standards.
On the other hand, the mat finish patina shown on Mr. Kermit Oliver's Kachinas in wash silk twill is appreciated. It adds vintage characters to its historical theme.
Style:
The stiffness of the regular silk twill allows these scarves to be knotted in different styles with knotting techniques such as ties, pulls, twists, wraps and bows. Solid, bulky knots may appear due to their stiffness, and the knots would hold up for hours without collapse. The scarves will remain in their perfect square shape.
The soft wash silk twill scarves always look relaxed and flow beautifully. It feels warm to wear on cold days. My friend (Instagram: lulupairs3) demonstrated the heart-shaped knot with the Équateur in the fuchsia colourway on Valentine's day 2021. The heart-shaped knot looks lightweight, puffier and prettier than the one I had with traditional silk twill in my tutorial.
Durability:
Hermès has proved the quality and durability of the regular silk twill throughout the years with proper care.
In particular, Équateur and Les Danses des Indiens in regular silk twill are marvellous wearable arts and are also fantastic art pieces for display. They are valuable artistic items for Hermès scarf collectors.
Kachinas in wash silk twill is delicate. A silk thread just broke naturally inside its box. However, the Équateur in wash silk twill has no issue.
Suggestion to Stiffen Wash Silk Twill:
Most regular silk twill scarves would eventually soften as time goes by, except for some vintage scarves. Have you hesitated to purchase a wash silk twill scarf because you didn’t want to be a frustrated-wrinkly-scarfie in the morning? Have you tried to tie knots as splendid as made from regular silk but with a wash silk twill? Or you have experienced the easy scratch/pull issues in the wash scarf just like me. Here is my experiment result by using spray starch or sizing on the wash silk twill scarf.
The benefit of using starch or sizing:
1. Stiffened wash silk twill scarves could make splendid bow knots as traditional silk twill scarves.
2. Starching or sizing acts as a shield to protect dirt and sweat away from the wash silk twill. It also helps make stain removal easier and maintain a clean, crisp appearance of the wash silk twill scarf.
3. Increase the durability to protect the silk scarf surface by reducing the risk of scratch/pulls. If you are not satisfied with the starch/sizing results, just simply do a quick rinse to soften the scarf again.
Disclaimer: Hermès recommends dry cleaning all silk scarves or machine-washing scarves in wash silk twill. Starching and sizing scarves at your own risk. You are cautioned that the blogger accepts no responsibility for any accidents you may encounter or liability for damages to your scarves as a result.
