The luxury French Maison Hermès released the elegant carré Plumets et Panaches in the Spring/Summer season of 2022. The Hermès catalogue briefly describes the carré as follows: For this delicate design, Florence Manlik was inspired by illustrations from a German album of saddlery and buckles from the early 20th century, which is kept in the Emile Hermes collection. The rooster and ostrich feathers recall the splendour of the parades of yesteryear, during which the horses' bridles were decorated with feather arrangements known as plumes. The "tail" decorations made of horsehair complete the ceremonial ornaments of these colourful carriages.
A plume is a large conspicuous or showy feather proceed by birds of paradise, peacocks, pheasants and ostriches etc. The flightless ostrich is the largest living bird in the world and is native to Africa. Although people call all types of ostrich feathers “plume”, only the ostrich wing feather refers to the plume.
Like Sarah Abrevaya Stein said: "Ostrich feathers were valuable commodities at the beginning of the twentieth century, their value per pound almost equal to that of diamonds". The ostrich feather trade peaked in the late nineteenth century as the farming of ostriches allowed farmers to pluck the feathers instead of slaughtering the birds. The plumes were often used for decorative or ornamental purposes, commonly used among marching bands and the military.
on the carré Plumets et Panaches, the artist depicts eight pieces of plumes in a circular composition arrangement. Three pieces of ostrich plumes with gracefully curved ends adorned with a fan-shaped plume, a tall plume and three carriage decorations. With the bridle attachments towards the centre, the plumes overlap and expand to their gloriousness on the carré.
The artist Florence Manlik was inspired by illustrations from a German album of saddlery and buckles from the early 20th century. To bring out the vintage vibe and haze effect, the artist applied her signature skills to emphasise the feathers' movement and direction, the flow leads the viewer’s eyes from one plume to another. By decreasing contrast and clarity to create lightness and softness of the objects, the feathers' realistic details become blurred and fade as time flies.
The colourway 06 contains taupe, cedar brown, steel blue, Prussian blue, lavender, chestnut and teal colours etc. The teal hem increases its calmness and serenity of it. The colour palette brings a nostalgic atmosphere that enhances the vintage theme and adds charm to the art piece. The elegance and sophistication make this carré a great choice for accessory or interior wall art.
