When Hermès released Space Derby in the first quarter of 2021, numerous carré collectors were waiting anxiously to buy the Space Derby in marine/rose vif/Multicolore. The black/gold colourway immediately became the most popular in Asia, especially in China. Gold symbolises wealth and prosperity in Asian culture. The equally beautiful colourways, including the splendid orange, the romantic pastel pink and blue were sold out in minutes in Asia and North America. The colourway 01 Jaune vif/vert fluo/Multicolore is a rare find at the moment: its spectacular hem has a total of 10 different colours.
As described in the Hermès catalogue: “Here, we are launched into space for a breathtaking derby among the stars! Mysterious planets and constellations light up a track on which six jockeys race at top speed. The artist Ugo Bienvenu drew inspiration from mid-twentieth-century American comics and their superheroes for these cosmic teams of horses steered by daring drivers. Every detail contributes to the futuristic and colourful atmosphere of this thrilling race, from the curves of the chariots to the combinations of the horses.”
Ugo Bienvenu is the Animation Director, illustrator and comics book author who runs Remembers Productions and Les_editions_realistes. The incredible brief film of Space Derby in 3D adaptation is available for viewing on the artist's Instagram page.

More surprises follow the release of its pop-culture carré. Meanwhile, Hermès launches the iconic Click H Space Derby Bracelet, the Space Derby Dream-Box and a pendant necklace with a compartment similar to a matchbox that can hold precious treasure. The Limited edition Arceau Space Derby Watch with hand-drawing adventure motifs in pink opaline and black aventurine.
The artist Ugo Bienvenu strives for straightforwardness in carré design. He tends to have a flair for dramatic impact by using clean lines, bold outlines, high saturation and bright colours. Space Derby is easily recognisable due to its vibrancy and unique characteristics. The bold features grabbed the collectors' attention instantly on the Hermès press day 2021, an in-store and official online shop.
The sky is dotted with countless unknown planets and small stars as if to invite people to the vast space to watch the space race one by one. Six jockeys are galloping with good grace on a gradient colour race track in a breathtaking starry sky. At the centre of the carré, an independent, calm and confident driver with windblown hair wears a pair of modern slim sunglasses and a suit with wild, sharp shoulder pads. That is an ultimate symbol to associate the driver with a strong, tough and powerful female character. The character with windblown hair is a signature style of Ugo Bienvenu. Another character with windblown hair also appears in the first Hermès double face carrés called WOW, which was issued in Spring/Summer 2020 and reissued in Spring/Summer 2021. The horses are dressed in a modernised set of horse armours with criniere, peytral and the croupiere. One gallops on par with another on the gradient race track. Five jockeys followed the first driver in their distinctive characters.
The dreamy starry sky patterns are aesthetically pleasing. The artist interrupts the serene scene with six jockeys, chariots, and a race track boldly to bring the audience a thrilling visual impact. The diagonal lines of the race track lead the audience's eyes through the whole art piece from far to near. The curved lines on the horse armours, chariots, and race track with soft edges generate subtle, smooth, and bouncy magnetic race track effects. Since the purpose of the silk fabric printing media, it requires foldable and rollable, which is different from the hardcover book. The smooth curve lines with soft edges soften the sharpness of the pop-art style. The lines connect the toughness of the characters and the softness of the silk fabric. The drawing perfectly blends into the velvety luxury silk fabric as a result.
Not only does this spectacular scarf can be paired with sneakers, jeans and a casual denim button-down shirt, but it can also be turned into fabulous romantic floral knots and bring back the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
